Laser Phlebectomy: The Gold Standard for Treating Varicose Leg Veins

Vascular surgeons Dr. Vaidotas Zabulis, Dr. Elvyra Stanevičiūtė, and Dr. Artūras Mackevičius perform laser phlebectomy procedures at the Vascular Diseases Centre of Vilnius Kardiolita Clinics, offering the most advanced and effective treatment for varicose veins.

According to Dr. Elvyra Stanevičiūtė, this minimally invasive procedure not only alleviates symptoms such as heaviness and pain in the legs but also significantly improves the appearance of the calves. In more severe cases, where trophic ulcers have developed, the healing process is accelerated post-surgery.

"At Cardiolita Clinics, we use the latest-generation 1940 nm diode laser for laser phlebectomy, which effectively vaporises the water in the vein, preventing blood from leaking into it. This technique minimizes damage to surrounding tissues, thereby reducing the risk of complications," explains Dr. Stanevičiūtė.

Prior to the procedure, patients must undergo a full blood count, electrocardiogram, and receive clearance from their general practitioner to ensure the surgery is safe. If possible, certain medications, including some blood thinners and hormonal contraceptives, should be temporarily discontinued. Additionally, patients should avoid food and drink for at least six hours before the operation.

The procedure typically lasts between 30 and 90 minutes. Following the surgery, the leg is bandaged, and a compression stocking is applied, which must be worn for about a week. For one month post-treatment, patients are advised to avoid strenuous physical activity, bathing, sun exposure, and long journeys by plane or car.
