Achilles Tendon Repair

Tendons are the robust bands of fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscles to bone. The Achilles tendon is a tendon of a three-headed muscle in the posterior compartment of the leg that connects the muscles in the back of your calf to your heel protuberance.

Chronic inflammations of the Achilles Tendon, often resulting in a tendon rupture are common problem of professional sportsmen, however tendon rupture can develop in people not involved in sports as a result of direct trauma. It manifests by a sharp pain in the affected site accompanying with swelling, difficulty or restricted foot flexion.

About the surgery:

Achilles Tendon tear is commonly treated applying surgical methods when tendon integrity is restored by suturing it. Tactics of the surgical treatment depends on the injury severity: tendon suturing or tendinoplasty are applied. The best results are achieved if medical advice is sought immediately after the trauma The older injuries are associated with more complicated treatment and post-operative period.

Before the surgery:

The team of physicians in our clinic will carry out all necessary examinations and will assess general patients’ health condition. Aiming to ensure the best possible result, before the surgery you should follow physician's instructions.

During the surgery:

The surgery will be carried out under a general anaesthesia. The tendon integrity during the surgery is restored maintaining its entire length. In case of complete tear of the tendon without the presence of a defect, the tendon's ends are sutured, however if tendon defect is detected, a tendinoplasty is carried out with tendon elongation or using the tendon autograft. Usually, the surgery lasts for about 2 hours.

After the surgery:

After the surgery the patient for several hours is transferred to an intensive care ward for observation, later the in-hospital treatment is continued. Usually on the next day after the surgery the patient is discharged. The affected after the surgery  for at least 6 to 8 weeks.is usually immobilised applying a special splint. Post-operative pain is easily controlled by medicines. After 6 to8 weeks rehabilitation treatment  is necessary involving exercises of tarsal and foot joints and strengthening of calf muscles. Sport activities are allowed after 3-4 months.
