De Quervain disease treatment

De Quervain Tenosynovitis Surgery

De Quervain syndrome is inflammation of two tendons that control movement of the thumb and their tendon sheath. It causes pain at the outside of the wrist, that is increased with gripping or rotating the wrist. The thumb may also be difficult to move smoothly. People who do certain repetitive movements (hairdressers, office workers who use keyboard and mouse everyday) are mostly at risk to develop De Quervain syndrome. Surgical treatment is a long term a most effective way to resolve the condition.

How the surgery is performed?

Surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and typically is an outpatient procedure. During the surgery, a small incision is made on the side of the wrist. Then the tissue over the swollen tendons is opened, to release the compressed nerves. Loosening them up reduces the pain. The incision is then closed using stitches.

Postoperative period

  • First 2-3 days the operated hand should be kept immobile and elevated whenever possible;
  • To release swelling and pain, ice therapy can be used for first 3 days (10-15 minutes at a time every 2-3 hours);
  • Avoid use of the hand and wrist for activities that could strain the surgical site (such as various home chores, lifting heavy objects, typing) for 2 weeks;
  • Hand function fully recovers after 4 weeks.
