Preparation for the surgery
Gynecomastia is a condition caused by an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone in men. In some cases, gynecomastia may resolve on its own or be treated with medication. When conservative treatment methods are not effective, the breast tissue and surrounding skin is removed through male breast reduction surgery. Certain medical tests and doctor consultations are necessary prior to the surgery, and all this preparation is done the day prior to the surgery. Before the surgery, you will have a meeting-consultation with the surgeon to discuss the important aspects of the surgery, expected post-operative appearance and post-operative period – recovery.
How the surgery is performed?
Gynecomastia can have 4 stages, stage 4 being the most severe form of gynecomastia, meaning that not only the fat would need to be removed with liposuction, but also the breast tissue must be lifted, which is a significantly more complicated surgery compared to the usual fat removal of gynecomastia. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the stage of the condition and the complexity of the surgery, gynecomastia surgery, takes anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to perform. It is recommended to stay in the hospital for 2-3 days after the surgery.
Postoperative period
- Full recovery period may take from a couple days (for stage 1 gynecomastia) to a several weeks (for higher stages gynecomastia). Most patients are able to get back to their regular routines just a couple weeks after the surgery, while for more complex cases, recovery may take up to 3 months. This depends on the difficulty of the surgery performed.
- It is recommended to wear a compression garment (which will be provided at the hospital) for the first 3-4 weeks after the surgery. This prevents excessive swelling and helps the tissues heal easier.
- While you may be sore and feel swelling in your chest area, pain after male breast reduction surgery is tolerable.
- Exercising and intensive physical activities should be avoided for 3 weeks after the surgery.
- Pain medicine may need to be taken for 7-10 days after the surgery.
