High Tibial Osteotomy

Osteotomy surgery – is a surgical treatment method used to treat the injured structure of the knee joint affected by arthrosis or trauma During a surgery an incision through the bone tissue is made using certain surgical instruments and leg axis is corrected. As a result of this surgery the load bearing points are slightly changed, thus while the patient walks the load bearing is transferred to the less damaged articular surfaces.

During the surgery

Usually, the surgery is done under general or spinal anaesthesia. During the surgery an incision is made in one of the bones making a knee joint, an artificial fracture is created and a cut bone is fixed in the desired position. This fracture will heal during the post-surgical period. Tendon reconstruction, fixation or removal of the free bodies, foreign bodies or osseous outgrowths can be removed, tunnelling of joint defect, transplantation of cartilage tissue and synovectomy can be carried out. After the surgery surgical wounds are sutured, sterile dressings with antiseptics are applied and the affected leg is immobilised using a splint or plaster.

After the surgery

After the surgery cold applications can be used, as well as symptomatic treatment with analgesics or antibiotic prophylaxis is administered, in some cases the fluids generated during the surgery in the tissues adjacent to the affected joint can be aspirated using a syringe.
