Subchondroplasty

Subchondroplasty

Subchondroplasty - the innovative procedure liberates from pain and returns back the joy of movement. This procedure is minimally invasive treatment and indicated to correct the osseous defects occurring after trauma and known as bone marrow lesions. It is also applied to treat lesions of tarsal, knee and hip bones and can be used to fill in cysts.

During the procedure a special needle is inserted into the osseous defect and “AccuFill” product – a specially engineered calcium phosphate is injected. A calcium phosphate of paste consistency injected into the lesion site, undergoes crystallisation at a body temperature and matches the natural bone structure by 99%. It is typically an outpatient procedure, so patients return home the same day.

Diagnosis

The surgeon will base a diagnosis of a subchondral bone defect on your clinical history, physical exam and MRI findings. A subchondral bone defect often referred to as a Bone Marrow Lesion, or BML is a term for a finding on an MRI that represents an abnormal area or defect inside the bone.

Results

  • The injection sets and remodels into new bone during the healing process.
  • Data demonstrates sustained pain reduction, improved function and quality of life.
  • This procedure does not preclude future procedures. Should it become necessary, future surgery is still an option.
