Treatment of flexed fingers – Dupuytren's contracture

Dupuytren’s disease is a fascia (a tissue layer underneath the palm and finger skin) thickening. This is one of the most common hand diseases. It causes pulling the fingers toward the palm, the pulling intensity may increase gradually. People with Dupuytren’s contracture experience difficulty in everyday activities because of altered position of fingers in the hand. Dupuytren’s contracture is treated surgically.

How the surgery is performed?

An incision is made in the palm during the surgery and the tissues interfering with usual hand functions are removed. The surgery is carried out under the local anaesthesia and lasts for about one hour, the patients are discharged on the same day.

Postoperative period

  • The sutures are removed on Day 10-14 after the surgery;
  • Light hand movements are allowed 1-2 days after the surgery, however usual active motions of fingers and hand are allowed only  after 2-3 weeks, when the wounds have healed completely;
  • The full hand function is restored after 4 weeks.
